History
Throughout its long history, spanning three centuries since 1889, ABEA has faced many challenges, including two world wars and various economic recessions, and has changed owners several times. Despite this, the ABEA factory has carved its own story, leaving a significant mark on the social and economic life of the city of Chania, as well as on Crete and across the country.
Studying the history of industrial heritage holds particular significance for regions like Crete, where industrial development occurred much later than in other European countries.
The establishment of ABEA at the end of the 19th century (1889) was a milestone for the economic life modernization of the region, as it was the first factory of its kind in Greece and one of the largest in the Mediterranean region. In the 18th century, olive oil was the main export product of Crete. ABEA created an independent economy on the island, supporting the agricultural sector, particularly the production of olive oil, the main agricultural product of the region, and providing employment for a large number of city residents.
The company has gained recognition for its meticulously maintained tradition combined with an innovative approach to production. ABEA's range includes various types of olive oil, popular both in Greece and internationally. ABEA is also a pioneer in the production of natural cosmetics based on olive oil. By adhering to the principles of sustainable development, the company supports the local economy and protects the cultural heritage of the region.
