Greek oregano for the catering industry

Oregano is characterised by a distinct, spicy flavour and an intense aroma, which sets it apart from other varieties. It is prized for its medicinal properties and is a staple herb in Mediterranean cuisine. It is used in almost all traditional Greek dishes, lending them their characteristic flavour and aroma.

The name ‘oregano’ derives from the Greek words ‘oros’ (mountain) and ‘ganos’ (joy, splendour), which translates as ‘joy of the mountain’. This plant was already in use in ancient times, and according to the beliefs of the ancient Greeks, the goddess Aphrodite created its sweet and spicy scent as a symbol of happiness. Oregano is not only an aromatic and honey-producing plant, but also an important ingredient in Greek cuisine.

The Hirtum variety, or wild mountain oregano, grows naturally in the mountainous regions of Greece. It is characterised by a unique flavour and strong aroma thanks to its high content of oregano oil, which contains carvacrol – a substance with antiseptic properties.

Uses:

  • It has strong antioxidant properties, benefiting the digestive and respiratory systems.
  • It has anticonvulsant, cholagogue, expectorant, stimulating and toning effects.
  • It effectively combats intestinal parasites, bacteria and fungi.
  • It may stimulate menstrual bleeding and aid in the prevention and treatment of prostate conditions.
  • It strengthens the nervous system, has a calming effect, improves general well-being, and boosts vitality, energy and appetite.

Note: Pregnant women should avoid consuming mountain oregano. When preparing an infusion of Oregano hirtum, it is recommended to use small amounts, as it is very potent and may cause cramps.

Ingredients:

Greek oregano

Storage:

Store in a dry, dark place in a tightly sealed container to preserve freshness and the strength of the aroma. Avoid moisture and light, which may affect the quality of the herbs.
