Malotira (Sideritis syrica) is a plant that grows only in Crete, in the mountains at altitudes above 800 metres above sea level, which is why it is also known as ‘mountain tea’. Its properties have been known since ancient times; the philosopher Theophrastus and the physician Dioscorides both refer to it. As it is a rich source of iron (Fe), it was named Sideritis (which in Greek means ‘that which is of iron’). It is a source of flavonoids and essential oils, and has antibacterial and diuretic properties. It has a delicate flavour and a unique aroma 

Mountain tea is used to treat colds and sore throats, owing to its soothing and antipyretic properties. It helps to combat indigestion, gastrointestinal complaints and high blood pressure. The latest scientific research has shown that it has powerful antioxidant properties, helping to combat cancer cells; furthermore, as demonstrated at the University of Athens, it delays the development of osteoporosis and has a beneficial effect on brain function. Around 99 different active compounds have been identified in the plant and, most importantly, it has been found that drinking the infusion in large quantities does not cause any adverse effects.
