Mountain oregano has a rather pungent flavour and stands out from other varieties thanks to its beautiful, strong aroma and medicinal properties. It is a staple herb in Mediterranean cuisine. It is used as a seasoning in almost all Greek dishes.
Origanum vulgare is the finest Greek variety. Madara oregano contains only leaves and flowers; the stems are separated by hand using traditional methods.

The name ‘oregano’ derives from the Greek words ‘oros’ (mountain) and ‘ganos’ (joy, splendour), meaning ‘joy of the mountain’.
It was first used by the ancient Greeks, who believed that the goddess Aphrodite had created such a sweet and spicy scent as a symbol of happiness.
Oregano is an aromatic, honey-producing plant and, above all, an excellent herb – a staple of Greek cuisine!
The Hirtum variety – wild mountain oregano – grows naturally in Greece. It has a unique flavour and a strong aroma, as it contains a large amount of oregano oil, which includes carvacrol, known for its antiseptic properties.

Pregnant women should avoid consumption. When drinking an infusion of Oregano hirtum, brew only a small amount, as it is very potent and may cause cramps.
